A video shared on X claims to show the USS Mason, a US Navy destroyer, being hit by a Houthi missile.

Verdict: False

The video does not show the Mason. The video is from 2013 and shows a missile test from Norway.

Fact Check:

The Houthis claimed to have targeted the Mason with an anti-ship missile, according to Reuters. A U.S. official denied that the Houthis hit the ship and a commercial vessel, the Destiny, the outlet reported.

Social media users are sharing a video claiming to show the Mason being hit by a missile. One user wrote, “BREAKING: The #US destroyer ‘Mason’ was precisely hit in the Red Sea. For the first time, the military spokesperson of the Yemeni Armed Forces, Brigadier Yahya Saree, announces a direct hit on the destroyer, indicating a shift from warnings to direct targeting.”

This claim is false. The video does not show the Mason being hit by a Houthi missile. Through a keyword and image search, Check Your Fact found that the video is from 2013 and shows a Norwegian missile test.

“Norways new Naval Strike Missile. Can be shot from a great distanse with a devestating force! The missile was launched against the old KNM Trondheim outside Andøya in Nordland, Norway. The missiles is produced Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for the Norwegian armed forces,” reads the video description.

U.S. Central Command said in a May 13 statement that the Mason shot down a Houthi anti-ship ballistic missile. (RELATED: No, Vladimir Putin Did Not Say That Russia Will Support Iran If The U.S. Attacks It)

Later, between approximately 5:51 p.m. and 6:02 p.m.(Sanaa time), USS Mason (DDG 87) successfully engaged and destroyed one inbound anti-ship ballistic missile launched by Iranian-backed Houthis from Yemen over the Red Sea. Additionally, USCENTCOM forces destroyed one UAS launched by Iranian-backed Houthis from Yemen over the Red Sea. There were no injuries or damages reported by U.S., coalition, or merchant vessels,” the statement partially reads.
