FACT CHECK: Video Shows Plane Crash, Not Drone Spotted Over East Coast

A post shared on social media purportedly shows a video of a downed drone on the interstate.

Verdict: False

The video is from a Dec. 12 plane crash.

Fact Check:

The Federal Aviation Administration recently banned the use of drones over parts of New Jersey and outlined an area that they are unable to fly in, The New York Post reported. The ban is temporary, but they warned “deadly force” will be used against drones deemed a threat and operators’ certifications could be in danger, according to the outlet.

A post shared on Facebook allegedly shows one of the mysterious drones that has been spotted in several states crashed on a highway. The video was taken by someone in a car passing by and shows a large group surrounding a downed aircraft.

The caption reads, “Drone Crashes!”

The claim is inaccurate. The video is from a Dec. 12 plane crash.

The Associated Press reported on the incident, saying the crash resulted in the death of one of the two people that was on board. The New York State Police shared information about the crash on X saying, “Interstate 684 is closed at Exit 2 on the N/B side and at Exit 3 on the S/B side due to a small plane crash.” (RELATED: Viral X Video Does Not Authentically Show Drone Flying Over New Jersey)

There have been over 5,000 reported drone sightings that have occurred in states along the East Coast, according to USA Today. The Department of Homeland Security and many other official departments have claimed that the drones do not pose a threat to public safety.

This is not the first time misinformation about the drones sighted has circulated online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim the Pentagon is using “Operation Necromancer” to intercept the drones.
