A viral screenshot of a tweet shared on Facebook claims Hunter Biden appears in a photograph of President Joe Biden’s 1973 Senate swearing-in ceremony.

Verdict: False

The claim is false, as the photograph shows Biden’s elder son Beau, not Hunter, according to Getty Images and The Associated Press.

Fact Check:

Biden told 2024 Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris she’s “not going anywhere” following her loss to President-elect Donald Trump, according to Newsweek. Biden made the remark at a holiday event held by the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C., the outlet reported.

The screenshot, which has garnered over 5,000 likes as of writing, claims Hunter Biden appears in a photo of his father’s 1973 Senate swearing-in ceremony.

“This is Joe Biden being sworn into the Senate. That little boy is Hunter. He has a fractured skull and brain injuries from the car wreck. Joe made him get dressed up for a photo op cause he thought it would be good for his career. Hate Joe. Pity Hunter. Kid never had a chance,” the text of the original tweet reads.

A young child can be seen in the black-and-white photo of Biden’s Senate swearing-in ceremony.

The claim is false. Check Your Fact performed a keyword search, which led us to Getty Images, where a similar photograph from Biden’s Senate swearing-in ceremony can be seen. According to the image’s caption, the young child that appears in the photograph is Biden’s elder son, Beau.

“Senator Joseph Biden takes the oath of office from the U.S. Senate’s secretary, Frank Valeo with his father-in-law Robert Hunter and son Joseph Beau Biden at his side, in Beau’s hospital room,” the caption begins.

“Last month Beau and his brother Robert Hunter were injured in an auto accident that killed their mother Nealia and younger sister Amy. Senator Biden took the oath here with the permission of the Senate so that he could remain in Wilmington until both children were well. Beau is in traction while Hunter has recovered,” it continues. In addition, USA Today debunked the claim on Dec. 13, indicating the photograph had been captured by The Associated Press and showed Beau, not Hunter Biden. Furthermore, neither Biden nor the White House appears to have publicly commented on the claim.

Check Your Fact has contacted the White House for comment.
