FACT CHECK: Post Claims Buses Taking Migrants From NYC To Canada Due To Trump
A post shared on Facebook claims buses taking migrants from New York City to Canada due to President-elect Donald Trump.
Verdict: Misleading
The image is from 2022. It was taken in Chicago, not New York City.
Fact Check:
The incoming Trump administration is preparing for mass deportations of illegal immigrants, according to Fox News. One way they are doing this is by expanding immigrant detention centers, per the outlet.
Social media users are sharing an image of a man getting off a bus, claiming it shows a migrant preparing to leave NYC. One user wrote, “REPORT: Buses are stopping at NYC shelters multiple times per day picking up migrants…. and driving them to Canada, in advance of the Trump migration crackdown. We are not prepared for whats coming.”
The image, though, is from 2022. Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that the image is from Chicago and shows a migrant getting off a bus after arriving from Texas, according to the image description from Block Club Chicago.
“Migrants board shuttles after they disembarked a bus from Texas at Union Station on Sept. 7, 2022.Colin Boyle/Block Club Chicago,” reads the image description.
Check Your Fact did not find any media outlets reporting that migrants were boarding buses to head to Canada from New York City. There are reports that Canada is preparing for a “worst-case scenario” of a wave of migrants who are likely to flee following Trump coming into office, according to Reuters.
