Verdict: False
She is still alive at time of publication. The original poster of the allegation clarified that it was a joke.
Fact Check:
British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell is currently serving a 20 year prison sentence for conspiring to sexually abuse minors and other sex trafficking charges. She was sentenced in 2022, and her appeal was recently rejected by a Manhattan judge who said her sentence was “procedurally reasonable.”
Maxwell has long been associated with the well-connected financier Jeffery Epstein, who was linked to many powerful people such as former President Bill Clinton and Microsoft founder Bill Gates and have all been the subject of many rumors regarding sexual abuse. Epstein died while awaiting his own trial for sex trafficking charges, with the official cause being suicide, however many believe he was actually murdered.
A post on X claims that Maxwell has died while in prison, citing a post from the message board 4chan, who they say first reported Epstein’s death while in custody. “Looks like Ghislaine Maxwell may be dead. Remember 4chan reported Jeffrey Epstein’s death in advance,” the post reads in part. (RELATED: Did Lizzo and Lana Del Rey Have A Feud Over The Election On TikTok?)
Reports of her death are false information, however. She is currently incarcerated at FCI Tallahassee, a low-security prison known for it’s wide variety of activities. Check Your Fact ran an inmate search for her name on November 15th, and it shows that she is still there with no mention of her death.
A community note placed on the viral post shows that the claim was bogus. The original poster, who was anonymous, claimed it was a “larp,” which means that the original poster was acting out a ficticious scenario, according to Merriam-Webster. Maxwell is due to be released from prison in July 2037.
