FACT CHECK: Was Alejandro Mayorkas Arrested By Marines?
A post shared on social media purports that Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas was arrested by Marines.
Verdict: False
The claim stems from satire.
Fact Check:
President-elect Donald Trump announced that he will nominate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who previously suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed Trump, as head of the Department of Health and Human Services, Politico reported. Kennedy posted on X to thank Trump and claim that he will separate it from “the smothering cloud of corporate capture,” according to the outlet.
A post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, claimed that Mayorkas was recently arrested. The claim comes from a comment in reply to an article that claimed the director of the FBI will step down.
The post reads, “And I had news that Mayorka has been arrested for wearing white hats ! Wonderful day today !”
The claim is inaccurate. There is no credible news report that suggest Mayorkas was arrested. The claim stems from a satirical news outlet called Real Raw News. The article claims that on Nov. 10 Mayorkas was arrested by Marines when they intercepted his limo between their vehicles.
The website features a disclaimer that identifies the site as parody, “This website contains humor, parody, and satire.” (RELATED: Contrary To Threads Post, Jack Smith Has Not Been Fired As Of Nov. 6)
Mayorkas was impeached by the House of Representatives after being accused of not enforcing immigration law, but the Senate dismissed the charges, according to BBC. Majorkas’ impeachment marks the second time ever the Senate considered a cabinet secretary for impeachment, the outlet reported.
This is not the first time misinformation has circulated online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim Nancy Pelosi said Democrats would impeach President-elect Donald Trump before he gets elected.
