FACT CHECK: Alleged AOC Quote About Socialism Originates As Satire

A photo shared on Facebook allegedly shows a quote from New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that reads, “If socialism doesn’t work, why are all my socialist friends in DC multi-millionaires?”

Verdict: False

Ocasio-Cortez did not say this. Instead, the claim originates from a self-described “fake news” site.

Fact Check:

Ocasio-Cortez was joined by New York Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman at a political rally last Saturday, according to Newsweek. Ocasio-Cortez defended Bowman, who has called for a ceasefire in Gaza, against accusations of antisemitism, the outlet reported.

A Facebook image allegedly shows an article reporting on an Ocasio-Cortez quote. It shows an image of Ocasio-Cortez with the alleged quote and overlaid text that reads, “Deep Thoughts by AOC.” The “C” is made to resemble the hammer and sickle communist symbol.

It reads, “If socialism doesn’t work, why are all my socialist friends in DC multi-millionaires?”

This is not a genuine news article, however. The screenshot attributes the headline to Genesius Times, which is a self-described “fake news” site. The site’s tagline reads, “THE MOST RELIABLE SOURCE OF FAKE NEWS ON THE PLANET.” At the bottom of the site is a description that reads, “We strive to provide the most up-to-date, accurate fake news on the Internet. Our team of journalists, hacks, and starving writers only want one thing: to make you laugh and/or cry.”

There are no credible news reports about Ocasio-Cortez saying this. There is no record of this sentiment on her social media accounts or website. (RELATED: Fact Checking Aoc’s Claim That Rico Is Not A Crime)
