An image shared on Facebook purports to show a quote from French President Emmanuel Macron claiming that “England removed Scotland from the European Union (EU) against its democratic will.”

Verdict: False

There is no evidence Macron made the purported remark. The remark is neither referenced on the French President’s website nor on his verified social media accounts. There are also no credible news reports suggesting Macron made the purported remark.

Fact Check:

Photographer Soazig de la Moissonnière recently shared several photos of Macron boxing on Instagram, according to CNN. The photos are believed to be representative of Macron’s “increasingly tougher stance on Moscow,” the outlet reported.

The Facebook image purports to show a quote from Macron claiming that “England removed Scotland from the EU against its democratic will.” The post does not provide the source of the purported quote attributed to Macron.

Likewise, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports suggesting Macron made the purported remark. In fact, the opposite is true. Reuters debunked the claim via a Mar. 22 article. The U.K.-based outlet Full Fact also reported the claim is false back in February.

Additionally, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and First Minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf have not publicly commented on the claim.

This is not the first time a quote has been falsely attributed to a world leader. Check Your Fact previously debunked a social media post claiming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once described America as a “golden calf.”
