Verdict: Misleading
The claim is inaccurate.
Fact Check:
California recently introduced a bill in the state legislature for reparations in late January, Politico reported. The package does not include a cash payment as part of the reparations package.
The post shared on Instagram purports Cochran mysteriously died. The post shows a video of Cochran talking about his lawsuit against the federal government suing for reparations.
The caption reads, “Before Johnnie Cochran mysteriously passed away he was sueing (sic) the government for slavery reparartions (sic).”
Cochran did not die mysteriously. In 2003 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and in 2005 he passed away from complications of that illness, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The attorney received treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in 2007 as part of a research program to study possible treatments for the tumor. Cochran’s widow Dale Cochran donated to the research at Cedars-Sinai.
Before his death, Cochran did work on a lawsuit for reparations. The project was called the Reparations Assessment Group, CBS News reported. (RELATED: Video Claims To Show Chinese Communist Party Destroying Mosque)
